The Project

The Soldan Moot on Legal Professional Practice (Soldan Moot) is a nationwide moot court competition for students from German law faculties. A German court proceeding is simulated based on a fictional case, familiarizing students with the forensic activities of lawyers. Students are expected to analyze a case legally, evaluate evidence, and formulate legal opinions as representatives of interests. They are also required to address counterarguments and ultimately convince the court of their position. Each year, a case is addressed that provides students with essential knowledge of professional law for lawyers. The competition was initiated by the Soldan Foundation in collaboration with the German Law Faculty Association (DJFT), the German Federal Bar Association (BRAK), and the German Bar Association (DAV). The scientific and organizational execution of the competition has been entrusted to the Institute for Procedural Law and Attorney Regulation in Hannover by the organizers.

Project Goal

Most graduates will later work as lawyers. Despite many reform efforts, preparation for the future legal profession during studies and traineeships is still not optimal. Beginner lawyers are often unsettled by questions of professional law for lawyers. The Soldan Moot provides a unique opportunity to become familiar with professional law for lawyers in a moot court competition. At the same time, students are made aware of the central of lawyers in the rule of law. In addition to legal knowledge, students are also expected to develop "soft skills" such as public speaking, a culture of argumentation, and teamwork.
